Leadership Critical to Association Success
What's the most critical factor in determining whether an association is successful or not? Many in the association world would argue that it is leadership, both at the volunteer and staff levels.
Organizations with effective, visionary leaders seem to able to define the future directions and acquire the resources needed to accomplish their objectives. Associations with resources but no leadership tend to stagnate and even decline.
How To Identify and Develop Leaders?
How do you find individuals likely be good leaders, convince them to serve your association and help them acquire the skills they need to lead?
One suggestion is to get individuals with some potential or interest involved in a strategic planning process. Observe the participants to see who is likely to contribute the most and get them involved in implementation of part of the plan. Then it's a matter of nurturing them until they rise to the top.
